Project SHE is Manthan Foundation’s flagship women’s health initiative dedicated to improving menstrual health awareness, cervical cancer awareness, and breast cancer awareness among women and adolescent girls in underserved rural communities of Uttar Pradesh. We launched the programme in response to gaps in health awareness, access to reliable information, and preventive healthcare services we identified through our grassroots engagement.
Why Project SHE?
Women and girls from marginalised communities often face barriers to accessing accurate health information, resulting in preventable health risks, delayed diagnosis, and poor health outcomes. To better understand these challenges, Manthan Foundation conducted a baseline survey covering 2,100 women and adolescent girls across five villages in Jaunpur district. The findings revealed critical gaps in awareness regarding menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, and early signs of cervical and breast cancer, highlighting the urgent need for community-based health education and support systems.
Our Communities
Project SHE primarily works with women and adolescent girls from underserved and marginalised communities, including Dalit, Musahar, and economically vulnerable Muslim households, where access to health awareness and preventive healthcare remains limited.
Where We Work
The initiative began in five villages of Jaunpur district and is now being expanded across Lucknow, Barabanki, Ayodhya, and Basti, creating a broader network of informed and empowered communities across Uttar Pradesh.
Community Health Champion Network
At the heart of Project SHE is a community-led approach. We have trained 50 Community Health Champions who serve as local advocates, peer educators, and trusted sources of information within their communities. Over the next phase of the programme, we aim to build a network of 200 Community Health Champions, ensuring sustainable knowledge-sharing and long-term community ownership.
Our Impact Goals
- Reach 10,000 women and adolescent girls across five districts.
- Train 200 Community Health Champions.
- Improve menstrual hygiene awareness and practices.
- Increase awareness of cervical and breast cancer prevention and early detection.
- Reduce stigma surrounding women’s health and reproductive health issues.
- Strengthen community access to health information, referrals, and support services.
Stories of Change
Through awareness sessions, community meetings, school-based interventions, and peer-led engagement, Project SHE is enabling women and girls to make informed decisions about their health, seek timely medical support, and become advocates for well-being within their families and communities. Every informed woman creates a ripple effect of awareness, empowerment, and healthier futures for generations to come.
Because health awareness is not just about preventing disease—it is about empowering women with knowledge, dignity, and the confidence to take charge of their lives.
